About the School
The School of Social Sciences and International Studies (SSIS) is located in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The School started operating as a new school in February 2007 following a major restructuring of the Faculty. The new School brings together the former schools of Politics and International Relations, Social Science and Policy, Sociology and Anthropology, and Social Work, creating a strong and dynamic new research environment. Our research scholars occupy leading positions in research institutes, academia, and both the public sector and private sector in this country and overseas. We are a lively group of colleagues committed to research, writing and teaching.
SSIS has six major strengths, providing prospective students with the opportunity to complete a program of study in the areas of Criminology, International Studies, Politics and International Relations, Social Science and Policy, Social Work, and Sociology and Anthropology.
The School offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in these areas of study.
• At the undergraduate level, the School offers the Bachelor of International Studies (BInSt), the Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSc), the Bachelor of Social Science in Criminology (BSocSc in Criminology), and the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). It also provides the major sequences of Development Studies, Policy Studies, Political Economy, Politics and International Relations, and Sociology and Anthropology in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and combined degrees.
• At the postgraduate level, it offers coursework programs in Couple and Family Therapy, Development Studies, International Law and International Relations, Policy Studies, Social Development, and Social Work in Counselling leading to either a Master, a Graduate Diploma or a Graduate Certificate.
• The School also provides prospective research students with the opportunity to study towards a PhD in Criminology, a PhD in International Studies and Global Transformations, a Master or PhD in Politics and International Relations, a Master of Social Science, a PhD in Social Science and Policy, a Master or PhD in Social Work, or a Master or PhD in Sociology.
Staff of the School come from a wide range of social science disciplines and professions including criminology, sociology, social work, economics, political science, international relations, psychology, history, and philosophy. They are active in theoretical and empirical research and receive funding from both national competitive sources such as the Australian Research Council, and individual research contracts from government and other organisations. They publish widely in Australian and international publications and supervise research students on a wide range of social science topics.
